Border Conference – Commissions & Border Governors Conference
New Mexico – Chihuahua & Sonora Commissions
Under the state’s mandate to increase trade with the Republic of Mexico the New Mexico Legislature established the New Mexico-Chihuahua Commission in 2003 and 2009 established the New Mexico Sonora Commission.
The purpose of the commission is to:
- Establish a network/framework between both states
- Develop mutually beneficial programs to resolve challenges along our common border
- Maximize opportunities for economic development and tourism
- Open and institutionalize lines of communications between the public and private sector in both states

Border Governors Conference
The Border Governor’s Conference is an annual gathering established in 1980 to bring together representatives of the four U.S. (New Mexico, California, Arizona and Texas) and six Mexican Border States (Chihuahua, Sonora, Nuevo Leon, Coahuila, Tamaulipas and Baja California) to discuss common border issues and opportunities, including:
- Economic Development
- Tourism
- Agriculture
- Science and Technology
- Energy
- Environment
- Water
- Wildlife
- Logistics and Border Crossings
- Education
- Security
- Health
- Emergency Management (Civil Protection)

The New Mexico Border Authority has hosted governor and mayor meetings at our facility. For over 21 years, the governor binational meetings have been coordinated by Laura Chaparro.
